West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Limited (Webel) the State Governments nodal agency for the development of IT & ITes industry. Webels role was to attract knowledge-based industries on a global scale and also to facilitate e-governance for the entire state of West Bengal. Webels prime task however, is now to create world-class infrastructure and facilities, encourage entrepreneurship and establish institutions that produce quality manpower more in numbers & would spearhead the future. Webel has successfully implemented a number of e-governance projects not only in West Bengal, but also for some other neighbouring states. West Bengal State Wide Area Network (WBSWAN) that connect all district head quarters, the block level and the gram panchayat; Internet Bandwidth, IT education in schools are a few to name. Webel has implemented the first of its kind in the country, connecting all 411 Police Stations of West Bengal and a series of applications run on the network such as criminal tracking system, application which permit messaging and access to data at grass-root levels to track crime.
